Sanders is a Donald Biggar Willett Professor of Engineering and the Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ece.illinois.edu) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (illinois.edu).  He is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and in the Department of Computer Science.  As ECE head, he is responsible for administrative, budgetary, hiring, and tenure decisions, and for leading the faculty in the development of research, teaching, and public service programs. Oversees administrative and research expenditures of about $70M per year. Oversees and participates in extensive advancement activities as head, including managing and increasing the Dept. endowment of approximately $72M. Leads aggressive faculty hiring campaign that has hired 15 new tenure-track and 5 teaching faculty since Jan. 2014. The department consists of 100 faculty, 2,126 undergraduates, 512 graduate students, and 60 staff members.

He was the founding Director of the Information Trust Institute (iti.illinois.edu) at Illinois (2004-2011).  As founding director, he grew ITI to over 100 faculty from 28 departments, bringing in over $80M of external sponsored research funding and creating or helping create the TCIP and TCIPG (Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid) Centers, the Boeing Trusted Software Center, the Illinois Cyber Security Scholars Program, the Illinois Center for a Smarter Electric Grid, the Center for Assured Critical Application & Infrastructure Security (CACAIS), the Assured Cloud Computing University Center of Excellence, and an NSA Science of Security Lablet.  From 2010 to 2014, he served as Director of the Coordinated Science Laboratory (csl.illinois.edu) at Illinois responsible for its research program with over 100 faculty members and 350 technical staff members, with research expenditures of over $40M per year.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the ACM, and the AAAS; a past Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Fault-Tolerant Computing; and past Vice-Chair of the IFIP Working Group 10.4 on Dependable Computing. Dr. Sanders's research interests include secure and dependable computing and security and dependability metrics and evaluation, with a focus on critical infrastructures. He has published more than 270 technical papers in those areas. He served as the Director and PI of the DOE/DHS Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIPG) Center (www.tcipg.org), which is at the forefront of national efforts to make the U.S. power grid smart and resilient.

He is also co-developer of three tools for assessing computer-based systems: METASAN, UltraSAN, and Möbius. Möbius and UltraSAN have been distributed widely to industry and academia; more than 1,700 licenses for the tools have been issued to universities, companies, and NASA for evaluating the performance, dependability, and security of a variety of systems. He is also a co-developer of the Loki distributed system fault injector, the AQuA/ITUA middlewares for providing dependability/security to distributed and networked applications, and the NP-View tool for assessing the security of networked systems.  He is the co-Founder of Network Perception, Inc. (network-perception.com), a startup that provides products to assess critical infrastructure network security.
