Neurosynaptic Chip Architecture

Tuesday, March 17
9:00 am - 9:30 am

Our brains readily perform tasks of perception, cognition, decision, and action while occupying a small volume and using very little power. Although electronic computers have developed to a highly sophisticated state, it has proven difficult to use them to do brain-like tasks with similar efficiency.  A new brain-inspired architecture and chip--"TrueNorth"--provide the basis for low-power, scalable systems capable of real-time processing of spatio-temporal sensory data.

William P. Risk joined the IBM Corporation in 1986 as a Research Staff Member at the Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA, after receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University.  His technical work at Almaden has included the development of compact blue-green lasers, optical waveguides, quantum cryptography, surface plasmon resonance, nanoscopic devices, scientific visualizations, and brain-inspired computing.  He has authored or co-authored over 100 publications in technical journals and conference proceedings as well as one book, and holds fifteen patents.  He now serves in the Brain-Inspired Computing group as a Technical Project Manager. Dr. Risk is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and a Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
