Communicators Programming at ECEDHA

Over the past year, ECEDHA has been working on an ambitious rebranding project with Tailfin Marketing to raise the visibility of the field of ECE to prospective students and the general public. We have made great strides and are excited to present research findings, creative concepts, and an implementation plan and marketing toolkit that can be used by all member schools at the 2018 ECEDHA Annual Conference & ECExpo in Monterey, California.

Last year, Catharine June from the University of Michigan and Ashlee Gardner from Georgia Tech formed an ECE Communicators Group and hosted special programming for communicators  at the Annual Conference. We were pleased to have quite a few communicators from all over the country attend. This year, we hope to host an even larger group as it is an important time to get your institution's communicator involved.

In addition to all of the valuable programming on education, diversity, and research at the Annual Conference, Tailfin Marketing will be presenting the new branding strategy and concepts during a plenary panel session. There will also be a dedicated ECE Communicators Meeting, allowing your institution's communications and public relations professional to get an in-depth introduction to the branding toolkit and implementation strategies, as well as crucial networking time with peers.

Dedicated Communicators Programming // Schedule of Events
While Communicators are invited and encouraged to take advantage of the full conference programming, the below schedule highlights the dedicated Communicator sessions at the Annual Conference.

Sunday, March 18

Registration Open (7:30am - 5pm)

ECE Communicators Lunch Meeting (12pm - 3pm)
  - Introductions
  - Lunch & Strategic Branding Overview from Tailfin
  - Framework Exercise
  - Open Forum

This is a dig in and “test drive” session for communicators to get deep exposure to the new ECE foundational brand elements and tools developed over the last year. We’ll begin with a recap of the recently completed brand strategy process and introduce a new, flexible creative framework and communication channel summary. From there, we’ll work through interactive group activities, so communicators can explore how they can identify, capture and translate their institution’s stories to a compelling and consistent ECE umbrella message. This session will include a review of user-generated content as well as discussion around ways to break through obstacles and leverage internal resources to apply lessons learned in the day-to-day storytelling at each member institution.

Time permitting, we’ll also explore key indicators for when it’s time to partner with an outside agency and how to get started. At the end of the session, user should feel empowered with a functional knowledge of the process and the storytelling tools at their disposal, and a game plan for application in their day-to-day communications.

ECEDHA Branding Working Group Meeting (3:30pm - 4:30pm)

After a quick introduction to the ECE brand foundations developed over the last year, this group will look to define what’s next, with a hands-on participatory exercise to explore and brainstorm around a “moon-shot” brand effort to deliver the ECE message to the masses without having to stand on the shoulders of individual institution stories. At the heart of this effort will be the exploration of an institution-linking global event series that will build on the ECE concepts of “magic, daring and limitless application.” Participants will have ample opportunity to share big ideas and specific details in helping shape this big picture initiative for 2018 and years to come.

ECExpo Welcome Reception (6:00pm - 7:30pm)

ECE Communicators Networking Dinner (7:30pm - 9:00pm)

Offsite Location

Monday, March 19

Plenary Panel on Branding (11:15am - 12:30pm)

Presented by Tailfin Marketing

An exploration of the power of branding for ECE, this session begins with a look at branding through the lens of ECEDHA corporate partner Texas Instruments (including brief history, challenges, breakthrough moments and how the brand promise rings true in an ever-changing marketplace).

With the stage set, the Tailfin team will review the new ECEDHA research and brand platform and will unveil the new creative examples and introduce a flexible framework for individual institution use. The session will conclude with a review of “when and how” to consider engaging outside support to help fuel storytelling at an institute level.
