Breakout Session: Connecting ECE Curricula with Makerspaces

Monday, March 19
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Makerspaces provide opportunities for hands-on learning, creation and innovation where students are inspired and put ideas into practice. The process of conception, discovery, experimentation, discussion, creation, test, iteration and collaboration prepare students for challenges they will face in industry and inspires an appreciation of the need for lifelong learning. This session (presentations followed by a panel discussion and Q&A) will highlight different models for connecting ECE curriculum and extracurricular activities to Makerspaces at five different universities. Examples include Makerspaces with ECE classes scheduled in them, Makerspaces without classes scheduled but with student assignments, and Makerspaces that focus on student extracurricular activities. The session will bring diverse perspectives from ECE chairs, a Maker Movement researcher, and a lab manager from both ECE and general engineering departments at:
  • Arizona State University
  • Bucknell University
  • University of Illinois
  • University of New Haven
  • University of Pennsylvania
