Keynote | Evidence-Based Techniques to Improve Instruction and Student Learning

Saturday, March 17
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Research into how people learn and remember shows that intuition leads many students to favor low-value study strategies such as rereading texts and lecture notes, recycling target information. By contrast, activities that promote elaborative processing, spaced/mixed review, and retrieval practice lead to better retention and later performance. Brown and McDaniel will summarize 3 big ideas drawn from cognitive science, and illustrate the underlying research, from middle school to medical school classrooms, that reinforce these principles for authentic educational contexts.
