Equation-Based Modeling

In this webinar you will learn how to customize your multiphysics simulations using equation-based modeling in the COMSOL® environment. Develop models by defining systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) directly in COMSOL. Ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and algebraic equations can also be readily used along with PDEs to add custom features to your models including your own multiphysics couplings, material properties, boundary conditions, and parameterized geometric dimensions. Readily couple your custom equations with any other built-in physics interface for a powerful approach to modeling that eliminates the need for user-written subroutines.

Equation-based modeling of the electrical activity in cardiac tissue

Through equation-based modeling, COMSOL Multiphysics® is as customizable and adaptable as you need it to be. The COMSOL Product Suite features nearly 40 add-on modules with most containing predefined physics interfaces to facilitate your model setup. However, COMSOL recognizes that highly specialized applications and innovation in general may require more flexibility. Similar to the physics interfaces already available in COMSOL, mathematics interfaces provide templates that allow you to enter your equations directly.

Several customization approaches and applications of equation-based modeling will be demonstrated in COMSOL throughout the webinar. Application examples include phase change, time-dependent loads and sources, and custom materials definitions. For any model geometry including 1D, 2D, and industrial-scale 3D CAD models, you will learn how to enter and apply the coefficient, general, and weak forms of PDEs such as Poisson’s equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Demonstrations also feature helpful instruction on analyzing and visualizing your results including more advanced forms of data analysis enabled by combining multiple types of equations, such as PDEs and ODEs, to calculate useful performance metrics. A Q&A session will conclude the webinar.
