December 2014

Letter from the Editor

Pritpal Singh

Dear ECEDHA Members, Industry Partners, and Colleagues,

Welcome to the December 2014 issue of The ECE Source. I hope that you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and are now working through the end of semester crunch!

I am pleased to serve as the editor for this issue of the ECE Source which is focused on the topic of International ECE activities.  There are three feature articles focused on teaching circuits and electronics in Ethiopian universities, a joint course between Villanova University and Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria (UNI) in Managua, Nicaragua, and a description of using information and communications technologies for development and disaster relief.

The first article is by Prof. Yacob Astatke and describes how he has used the RPI “red” board (the predecessor to the Analog Discovery board) to teach circuits and electronics in several Ethiopian universities. This low-cost technology has the potential to revolutionize the way circuits and electronics courses are taught in countries where laboratory resources are very limited.

The second article is by myself and colleagues from Villanova University and UNI and describes a new design seminar course that was first offered in the Spring 2014 term. The course is jointly taught to students at Villanova and UNI and is the preparation course for the senior design project course. The course is focused on the development of technologies for rural Nicaraguans.

Finally, the article by Stephen Hellen from Catholic Relief Services shows how the organization is using information and communication (ICT) technologies for development and disaster relief applications. This article can be used to inspire prospective students to major in the ECE fields who are interested in working in the humanitarian space.

Enjoy reading these interesting articles!

Let me wish you all a very enjoyable holiday season and best wishes for the new year.

Warmest regards,

Pritpal (“Pali”) Singh
