Coming Attractions

Hollywood’s Oscars and the hype surrounding them have me thinking in movie terms today.  For example, the news articles included in this issue work as previews of some of the featured attractions at the upcoming
ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo in Napa, California.

Making electrical and computer engineering more attractive—both in college and subsequent careers—will be a major plot line at this year’s conference.  ECE branding and awareness will be addressed by two panels, one with a group of department heads delivering the
university perspective, and a second panel of ECEDHA Corporate Advisory Council members with the view from industry.

The four news articles foreshadow various elements of these panel discussions, covering such issues as
retaining engineering students, attracting women to engineering, keeping women in engineering, and relating engineering to students’ favorite beverage (coffee actually, although my first guess was beer, too).  Anyone drawn to these topics may also want to take in the breakout sessions on STEM outreach and diversity.

Like any good movie trailer, these articles only provide teasers of what you will find in the full-length features.  For instance, ECE
xpo-goers can look forward to a technology demonstration that parallels what is described in the article about the UC Davis course on the application of technology to coffee brewing.  Here are two more hints: the demonstration also involves UC Davis engineering faculty and a beverage for which the Napa region is famous.

This is a mere sampling of the attractions to be found in the conference program and on the expo floor.  If this was a typical movie promotion, it would close by saying all of this will be coming soon to a theater near you, but that’s not the case.  The 2014 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECE
xpo is playing for a limited time only in an exclusive engagement at the Meritage Resort and Spa on March 21-25.  Fortunately, good seats are still available; just visit the conference registration page to reserve yours.
